Countdown to the Shabbaton, Day 2: Culture

Hey everyone! Barri Miller from CTeen Bucks County, Pennsylvania here. I’m really looking forward to meeting you all at this year’s NYC Shabbaton. Every year for the past three years, I have come away from the Shabbaton inspired and feeling alive. The whole experience is amazing and I have a blast, but the one thing, if I had to pick, that is my overall favorite thing about the shabbaton is meeting people from all over the world. Where I live and go to school there isn’t much diversity. Everyone has grown up in the same area and has been to school with each other since kindergarden. Going the shabbaton is like traveling to another universe. It’s amazing to suddenly be with over 2,000 Jewish teens who are so culturally diverse. I love meeting new people from all over and learning about where they live, how it is different from where I live, and also hearing different accents. Having all these differences allows me to be able to start a conversation with anyone and always have something to talk about. Meeting new people also ensures that I’ll have friends wherever I go.
It’s always so cool to go back to school after the Shabbaton and share my experience with my friends. “I spent the weekend with 2000 Jewish teens from all over the world. What did you do this weekend?”
CTeen continuosly teaches me new things. Every time I’ve attended the Shabbaton has truly broadened my knowledge about the Jewish world. The shabbaton is amazing and I can’t wait to learn more, and meet more amazing people from all over! See you all soon!
