Parshat Vayechi

The Parshat of the week is Parshat Vayechi:

Yaakov and his family make a new life in Egypt. Yaakov lives another 17 years in Egypt until he passes away with all his children at his side. He makes sure to bless all his children, in the way he believes proper. Now, Yaakov could not see very well and when he went to bless Ephriam and Menashe, Yosef’s sons, he switches his hands, blessing the younger son as if he were the oldest and vice versa. Yosef noticed his father’s mistake, but eventually understood that his father was doing what he did for a reason, not because of old age.

Yaakov attempts to tell his descendants when the final Moshiach was supposed to come, but at that moment he lost the ability to that knowledge; ultimately, because we must work for Moshiach now-a-days.

Yaakov continues to bless his sons, and give them all a role for the future. Shimon and Levi are separated, land wise, for when they move to Israel eventually due to the massacre in Shechem. Levi also did not specifically get a territory, but he received cities and the Beit Hamigdash.

Yaakov revieved a huge burial in Egypt, where many people Egyption and not attended. Everyone knew of his greatness. Yaakov’s body was then transported to Merat Hamchpela in Israel where his wife Leah was buried, along with his parents and Avrham, Sarah, Adam, and Chava.

Yosef also dies in this Parsha at 110 years old. He is buried in Egypt originally, and then was to be transferred to Israel when the Jews left Egypt. Before his passing, Yosef says a beautiful speech to B-nei Yisroel (The Jewish People) to keep their hopes up through their years of slavery: “G d will surely remember you, and bring you up out of this land to the land of which He swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Probably the most famous blessing from this weeks Parsha is “Hamalach HaGoel.” The words are a plea from Yaakov to the angel, who has stood by him faithfully throughout his life; to ask the angel to bless his offspring. – Hamalach Hagoel by Yeshiva Boys Choir


In honor of Yaakov’s angel, this weeks recipe is Angel Food Cake!


• 1 cup flour

• 1 1/2 cups white sugar

• 12 egg whites

• 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

• 1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• whipping cream

• fresh strawberries



1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Be sure that your 10 inch tube pan is clean and dry. Any amount of oil or residue could deflate the egg whites. Sift together the flour, and 3/4 cup of the sugar, set aside.


2. In a large bowl, whip the egg whites along with the vanilla, cream of tartar and salt, to medium stiff peaks. Gradually add the remaining sugar while continuing to whip to stiff peaks. When the egg white mixture has reached its maximum volume, fold in the sifted ingredients gradually, one third at a time. Do not overmix. Put the batter into the tube pan.


3. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven, until the cake springs back when touched. Balance the tube pan upside down on the top of a bottle, to prevent decompression while cooling. When cool, run a knife around the edge of the pan and invert onto a plate.


4. Whip the cream, and spread over the surface of the cake (maybe even add stawberries into the whipping cream). Top with fresh sliced strawberries.
