At last, the highly anticipated 14th annual CTeen International Shabbaton opened its doors to 2,000 plus teens from all around the globe. The weekend was enjoyed by all, but it was especially enjoyed by the winner of CTeen’s Female Leader of the Year: Levana Calvo from CTeen Massy, France.

Levana has been a part of CTeen for four years and has been a CTeen leader for one. The CTeen Leader of the Year title, which is given to a teen who has demonstrated remarkable dedication, engagement, and leadership in their CTeen communities and throughout the international network, was one she was excited and ready to be in the running for. The Leader of the Year award made its return this year after the first appearance of the 8 Under 18 Award last year.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Levana about her big win, and this is what she had to say.

Q: What made you decide to run for Leader of the Year?

A: What pushed me to present myself and run for Leader of the Year was that I wanted to represent my country and my chapter. I also wanted to give my time to help others, because CTeen is about giving back.

Q: What is your best CTeen memory?

A: My best CTeen memory was the concert in Times Square (which took place before the award was presented) during the 2022 Shabbaton. It was a magical and unforgettable night.

Q: Was it scary putting yourself out there and running for Leader of the Year? Were you nervous to compete?

A: I wouldn’t say that it’s scary to show up and run, but I think it’s a bit stressful having to face people you don’t know. Especially for me, since I don’t know the language [English] too much. But I would say, if you really want to participate in this contest, don’t think too much and just go for it.

Q: What was your reaction to winning Leader of the Year?

A: When I won I was very surprised, and then I was really happy because I realized that all of my work was not done for nothing. Then I was proud. Proud to represent my country, and proud to have won.

Q: What are your upcoming plans for the rest of the year as a CTeen Leader?

A: We are planning to organize humanitarian projects that I need to keep a secret right now. As soon as these plans are finalized, you’ll hear about them!

Mazel tov, Levana!
