Stop and take a moment to make a blessing on each food you eat. Here’s a handy-dandy guide to use for all your blessing needs!
- Bread made from the five species (wheat, barley, rye, spelt, or oat). However, for it to be considered “bread” the majority of liquid needs to be water. (Ex: pasta is not a bread)
Blessing: Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech Ha’Olam Hamotzi lechem min haaretz.
2. Food that is made from grains but not considered bread. (Ex: crackers, pasta, cereal, cakes, cookies)
Blessing: Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech Ha’Olam borei minei mezonot.
3. Wine or grape juice
Blessing: Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech Ha’Olam borei pri hagafen.
4. Fruit, or anything that comes from a tree or bush (except bananas)
Blessing: Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech Ha’Olam borei pri ha-aitz.
5. Vegetables, or anything that comes from the ground (including bananas).
Blessing: Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech Ha’Olam borei pri ha-adamah.
6. All foods that don’t fall into any of the above categories (Ex: all drinks (except wine and grape juice), fish, chicken, candy)
Blessing: Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech Ha’Olam shehakol nihiyah bed’varo.
